Ray's Grocery

Ray Turner founded
Ray's Grocery & Market, September, 1974

HISTORY

The little store on the corner of Pecan and Walker streets in Breckenridge has been in continuous operation as a grocery since March 6th, 1964 when Raymond Stewart and Don Peeks opened their third Stewart & Peeks location. Ray and Ima Jean Turner purchased the building from Don Peeks' widow, Zola, in 1974, and on September 1st that year Ray's Grocery & Market opened it's doors to customers.

Ray Turner began working in the grocery business at the age of 12 to help his widowed mother support their family of five. He worked for an independent grocer until 1953 when he started for the Safeway chain. Ray's unique brand of friendly service and knowledge of the grocery business led to a promotion to market manager at the young age of 21 – quite an accomplishment for that time. In 1955 Ray was transferred to the Safeway store in Breckenridge where he worked for 19 years until opening Ray's Grocery. His positive image, superior customer service and family first attitude were especially suited for small town customers – creating a special bond with each and every family that chose to shop in the store. Ray was the driving force behind the business for the first 25 years until failing health interfered with his daily presence in the market. Ray Turner passed away in 2000, but the continuation of his principles still drives the special relationship Ray's Grocery has with it's customers today.

Lee Olson and Beverly Turner, Ray's second daughter, were married in 1973. Lee had worked several years at Buddie's Grocery before joining his father-in-law in the new venture, running the grocery side while Ray managed the market. Ray's Grocery quickly developed a reputation for high quality fresh meats and produce, a friendly atmosphere and the best mesquite smoked barbecue in the area. As the business grew, additional employees were needed, and, in 1986, an extensive remodel doubled the size of the sales floor area. Lee's vision for the future of Ray's continues to this day, and in 2009, Ray's Grocery completed it's second major remodel – adding much needed work and processing areas, brand new coolers and freezers, a new state-of-the-art cooking facility, and additional storage space.

Over the years Ray's has continued to add products and services to satisfy their growing customer base. Ray's offers a wide variety of services including: party trays, catering, special orders, discounted meat freezer packs, home deliveries, custom wild game processing and much more. Each and every time a customer makes a request they can be sure that the Ray's team will do their very best to fulfill it. Ray's also has a delicious line of products made right here in the store such as: Ray's fresh salsa – a regional favorite, Ray's smoked German sausage – available in original, jalapeno, and honey, Ray's special recipe jalapeno and cheese summer sausage, Ray's famous hand-cut beef jerky – flavors include original, Texas-style, black pepper, mild jalapeno, and crushed red pepper teriyaki and, of course, our full service barbecue deli with mesquite smoked brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, chopped barbecue, Ray's Texas-recipe pulled pork and much more.
